May 27: Rob’s first post (or, Goodbye to the Wind in my Hair)

It’s the end of an era. I am selling my motorcycle.

Don’t get me wrong: I still love motorcycles. Adore them. In fact, I want lots of motorcycles.

Just not this one.

The Beemer has been a main source of transportation for over 6 years. Reliable. Steady. Kinda zoomy. But it’s not a very Alaskan motorbike, now is it?

Alaska wouldn’t have been kind to my NC stable, so they had to go. Now it’s time to focus on the future. When we get to AK, I’m going to need  some new rides.

What should I get?

  • In response to your query, I’m thinking some sort of all terrain vehicle, four wheeler or side by side vehicle. A snowmobile might be nice. Of course you may have “been there, done that”. Keep us posted on what you decide!

    • My ATV has been sitting in a friend’s barn in Wisconsin for three years! We’ll be picking it up and carrying it on the back of the RV when we pass through that area in July.
It looks exactly like this one:

I’ve never been a snowmobile person (they call them snow machines in Alaska apparently), but maybe that’ll have to change…
I think just a plain-Jane F150 is most likely the next vehicle for me. Boring, but practical!

  • Hey Rob, Jake and I were watching the BBC show Top Gear they had a Ford Raptor but check out all the options this truck has. this truck did well in the Canadian Rockies, has power and something more than the boring F150. Good Luck , I think this adventure is absolutely wonderful. save travels see you in July

  • Rob, I think you should get a mule as your main source of transportation. I am not referring to the mule ATV, I mean a real mule. Think of the benefits, you never have to worry about running out of gas, no oil changes, and you won’t get stuck in deep snow. Plus it will mow your lawn for you.
If you disregard my idea, and go for something boring and practical like a nice truck, then the first gift I am going to buy you is one of those awful window decals where the guy is pissing on the name of a different truck.
