We’re back!

Sorry about the lack of posts for the last few days. We have been off-line, without phone service and limited Internet access. But it has been lovely.

Since the last time I posted, we have driven through West Virginia, Ohio, and Michigan. Although we gave Lake Ontario a miss, we have been in each of the other Great Lakes! Lake Superior remains my hands-down favorite. We camped on the shores of Lake Erie near Monroe, Michigan. The beach was closed, and the cooling towers of the nuclear power plant visible on the far shore did not leave a positive lasting impression.

We then drove west across the state so that the girls could experience the beaches of West Michigan. We swam in Lake Michigan, and the beaches were everything I remembered. The fine sand and grass-covered dunes make the western beaches of Michigan some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. It was a worthwhile detour.

The next night, we slept along the shores of Lake Huron just east of the Straits of Mackinac. The cool breeze off the lake allowed us to get our best night’s sleep since leaving North Carolina. We got up early and drove across the Mackinac Bridge into the U.P. The drive west along US 2, with occasional bays of Lake Michigan popping up to the left, is one of my favorite drives anywhere.

Within a few hours, we had driven deep into the heart of Hiawatha National Forest. We wound up at the log home of Grandpa Bob (my dad) and Grandma Kathy. We spent a couple lovely days paddling and fishing in that little lake. It was really nice to reconnect with them for a few days. If a morning view like this doesn’t recharge your batteries, I don’t know what would:

From their house, it is just a hop and a skip up to the southern shore of Lake Superior. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, I should tell you that the south shore of Lake Superior is one of the best kept secrets in the Midwest. Where the North Shore is all rocks and cliffs and crashing waves, the South Shore is sandy beaches, water the color of the Caribbean, and beautiful scenery all around.

And cold water. That part’s the same.

We’ve now moved on to Iron Mountain. It feels like home, because I guess in a way it still is. We are in the central time zone now. Just three more times zones to go!

  • what a beautiful family! thanks for the days we spent together as you voyage on in Lennie! We had a bittersweet tea party (hats, personae, et.al.) and the tea set has been passed to a new generation. Maybe we can do it again someday!
