Iron Mountain, MI – Rob’s Hometown

We left Iron Mountain, MI, a few days ago but haven’t really given our time there its due and want to try to catch you up before we move on to the ADVENTURE part of our journey. We spent some time before the Fourth of July with Rob’s mom, Carol/Gran, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Rob was born in Marquette, Michigan but spent his childhood in Iron Mountain. Carol recently moved back to Iron Mountain where she too grew up. We had a great time there and I can see why Carol moved back. She found an exceptionally charming and comfortable home and she has a lot of family in Iron Mountain. Thankfully we got to see a lot of them while we were there. Carol hosted a beautiful potluck picnic. Ed, Rob’s brother – who is a professional chef – roasted an amazing turkey on the grill and we ate way too much. (We’ve been eating non-stop since we started visiting family. If we weren’t sure if or how much our family cared about us, we are certain now!!! All the thought and care and attention that has gone into all the yummy food we have eaten is evidence. I can’t wait to really learn how to fix bear, whale blubber and all the traditional Alaskan foods, to return the love. 😉 I’m just teasing, but I really do need to take some lessons on how to fix salmon and halibut well.) 2015-07-01 17.49.55

While we were in Iron Mountain, Carol took us to the Cornish Pumping Engine and World War II Glider Museum. That area has a long history of iron ore mining and this pump helped keep the water out of the mine. It is one of the largest pumping engines in the world. And the Gliders were built by Ford Motor Company’s plant in Kingsford, MI. (Kingsford and Iron Mountain are right next to each other and Kingsford is the home of Kingsford Charcoal. There is an interesting story behind the creation of charcoal and it’s tied to Henry Ford and Ford Motor Company which are very much a part of the history of that area. Dr. Google can provide you with way more information about it than I can.)

We are grateful for the wonderful memories we created while spending time with Carol and Ed and the Corcoran Clan in Iron Mountain. I don’t dare attempt to list everybody we saw, because I would undoubtedly forget somebody, but thank you all for your time and the yummy food and the awesome company. Please come see us in Alaska so we can create more memories. In fact, I think Rob’s Uncle Mike and Aunt Susan will be the first of our family that we will get to see in Alaska in August. They have long since had a cruise planned and they will be stopping in Anchorage. Woohoo!!!  Love you all!  Thank you!!!  O and Gran
