We spent the Fourth of July at my mom’s house in Somerset, WI with lots of family. We have four separate parental units resulting in lots of family and many Grandma’s and Grandpa’s, but I don’t think a child can ever have too many Grandma’s and Grandpa’s can they?
My brother, Charlie, and his wife Jen and their three children were there as were my step-brother’s Scott and Dan and their families. Scott and Kate have two boys and Dan and Michelle had twin girls earlier in the year and we got to meet them for the first time on this trip.
We had an entertaining and relaxing time in Somerset. Paisley already posted some photos of our fun, but I wanted to share a few more.
My mom and Jim live on a lake in western Wisconsin, called Bass Lake. It’s a great lake for fishing and fun. Whenever we are there we spend lots of time around a campfire with s’mores and storytelling and fireworks. We spend time swimming and playing on the lake and on the 4th we got on the lake just after dusk to sit in the middle of the lake and watch the awesome fireworks in 360 degrees all around us. These aren’t small fireworks either there must be many people who live on the lake who have friends with pyrotechnic expertise because these are big up in the sky fireworks. There is also a gentleman who comes out on the lake every year in his boat with his saxophone and plays all kinds of patriotic songs while the fireworks are going off. It is beautiful to hear that sound echoing off the water and the trees around the lake. It is very moving. We all sing along, cross our hearts to the Star Spangled Banner, and toot the boats horn in acknowledgement after each song. It’s great fun.
Rob was up to his usual antics of getting Jim’s helicopter stuck in a tree and singing camp songs around the campfire. We all laughed and had a wonderfully memorable time.

It was hilarious.
On the way to my mom and Jim’s Rob dropped the motorcycle off at my dad’s in Holcombe, WI. That was fine, but then when he went to pick up his four-wheeler which we were intending to tow behind Lenny to Anchorage (In case you are just now joining the blog, Lenny is the name we have given our RV/Motorhome. It is short for Relentless Vagabond.) the four-wheeler wouldn’t fit on the ATV carrier Rob bought in NC specifically for this purpose, soooo…… on July 6th Rob and Jim went into St. Paul, MN to buy a covered trailer. We had some belongings – especially winter stuff – stored in my mom and Jim’s pole barn while we were in NC and Rob’s mom, Carol, in her move, left some furniture for us, so the covered trailer served to put all kinds of things in it that my dad (who you will meet in our next post) will drive to AK in a truck that we intend to buy in and around the Twin Cities sometime in September or October.
Whew. If you understood all that, then you must know me well, because it’s a stream of consciousness, Kim thing.
Thank you Mom and Jim for putting up with our stuff, and driving us here and there for the van and the trailers, Lenny taking up a chunk of your driveway, and most of all for a memorable time. We love and miss you already!
