As the girls have mentioned already, after we left my dad’s house in Holcombe, WI, we drove to Rochester, MN to spend some time with friends. We went to one of our favorite restaurants in Rochester, “Whistle Binkies on the Lake” with the Larson family. Rob and I have known Paul since high school. Paul took his time figuring out what he wanted to be when he grew up, but he has truly figured it out, and does what he does with passion and flare. Paul finished his bachelor of science and he is currently working on his masters in education. He works for Mayo High School in Rochester as the planetarium director. He loves it! It’s a bummer that our paths in Rochester did not overlap.
Our second day in Rochester Paisley had breakfast with Antonella, one of her two best friends from Rochester. Thank you for making this happen Antonella and Greg!!
Meanwhile, while Paisley was at breakfast, Alese Larson made breakfast at their house and invited some more family friends, the Kimmes’ over. Rob grew up with John and Joe Kimmes in Plymouth, MN during his junior high and early high school years before he moved to Menomonie, WI. It was so nice to see friends we hadn’t seen in many years. I wish we had had more time. Thank you Larson family for allowing us to park Lenny right in your front yard, for getting to spend some time with your family and for the hospitality. (Doing laundry was a tremendous help!! :-)) Sorry about the potted plant that was decimated when we drove over it with Lenny.

We picked Paisley up after breakfast and drove into the Twin Cities to see more good friends, the Hasse’s. Sara was Mac’s primary hospice nurse and is now an incredibly Dear Friend!! Her whole family have become dear friends. Sara is the most amazing baker I’ve encountered, and it doesn’t stop there! Steve and Sara built this beautiful wood fired oven in their backyard and treated us to homemade, wood-fired pizzas. OH MY GOSH!!!! The finest pizza I’ve ever eaten. They have two sons, Jake and Kyle, who are both grown and out of the house (Kyle is a park ranger in SD and Jake is studying to be an arhitect. Jake showed us some amazing projects he has designed and the awards he’s won – WOW!! He’s going to have a bird house on display at the MN State Fair.) When the boys were in high school and involved in sports the Hasse’s would invite the team over to their house the night before cross country meets to do some carbohydrate loading and they would fix something like 70 pizzas in their wood-fired oven for these adolescent boys. Then, while the oven is still hot Sara will make all kinds of other goodies in the oven. After we had our pizzas, the next day they were having more friends over and they were fixing paella in the oven. Yum, yum….. Not only did we each get to create our own individual pizza, but we took the leftovers with us and we enjoyed them as we drove away from MN. YUMMY! Sara also prepared two dessert pizzas that topped it all off: cherry and mozzarella and a snickers and marshmallow. These were treats not soon to be forgotten. Thank you for the awesome memory-making experience!
We then drove back to Rochester to see more good friends, the Yanisch-Jankowski family. Paisley and their daughter, Maria, were in school together at Rochester Montessori. I worked at Rochester Montessori with Janine, who was the music teacher. Chris is a physician at Mayo Clinic. Not even a half hour before we arrived did they arrive home from more than a week away from home caring for family in Milwaukee and teaching and participating in a jazz camp in Door County, WI. As we were driving into their driveway, Maria was picking some beautiful flowers from their yard for an arrangement in the house, and in that half hour before we arrived they put together an amazing meal and most of it pulled straight from their garden! The girls picked fresh lettuce, several different kinds of herbs and raspberries. It doesn’t get any fresher than that. We laughed and had a great time! You have so much going on and yet you made time to spend with us. We enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you!!!
