From Chain Lakes Recreational Area to Black Diamond, Alberta

Today was intended to be a day to catch on a little sleep and make our plans for the next couple stops. We landed last night at a charming and mostly empty camping area in Alberta, and Lenny was well situated for a few days off the grid. We fired up the water heater and the girls had an unsatisfactory but effective shower, and we cooked out before enjoying an episode of Gilmore Girls on the big screen. Not a bad night of camping.

This morning we hit a bit of a snag.  I had noticed the water pump cycling on and off all night, and thought it was due to the shower the girls had taken. I got up in the middle of the night to make sure the shower was truly off (it wasn’t), and went back to bed. This morning I noticed it was continuing. Then, as Kim was just getting into the shower, the girls noticed water running down the floor. Uh oh. Turns out that the ice maker in the freezer was trying to make ice, but just kept running water into the tray. So the freezer was full of water and it was draining out onto the floor. I had to shut off the water pump (sorry about the shower, Kim) to get it to stop. We spent the next hour cleaning up the mess and salvaging what we could of the frozen food. We defrosted the freezer and so far it appears that the problem has resolved. But I’ll be keeping an ear out for the water pump in the middle of the night for a while.

After that we headed north (I’m thinking that’s going to be a general theme), stopping in Black Diamond. En route there was a large ranch that had a hat on every fence post. Cool! I love hats! I couldn’t find an open post to leave a donation, so I had to do a swap.

We’ll buy pizza from the ice cream shop to help repay them for their hospitality (we’ve been here most of the day!). Tonight we’ll drive toward Banff, and see if we can get another awesome campsite. And maybe Kim can get her shower.
