Today we left Alberta and entered British Columbia. Honestly, it was a tremendous let down after Banff and Jasper National Parks. The beauty in those parks is unsurpassed in our recent experience. Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks cannot compare to the extreme beauty of Banff. The glaciers were around every bend down the Icefield’s Highway.
We woke up in a campground in Jasper National Park and we landed in a smaller British Columbia Provincial park outside of Dawson Creek. Dawson Creek is known for Mile 0 of the Alaskan Hwy. The Alaskan Hwy is a 1500 mile road constructed during WWII by the Americans through Canada to Alaska because of an imminent threat from Japan. Dawson Creek was where the Highway was started. It’s not a very spectacular place, but we did the obligatory photographs at the start of the highway.
Because the scenery wasn’t as spectacular as previous days, we just put some miles behind us and then when we arrived at Dawson Creek we stopped to get a few chores done. We hadn’t done laundry for a while so we found a laundromat. This laundromat also had a shower that we paid a dollar a minute to use. We can heat up water in Lenny and shower in Lenny and we do, but today we rolled out of our campsite before the girls were out of bed so while waiting for the laundry we took turns showering. Paying for a shower by the minute as well as showering in Lenny where you have six gallons of hot water to use to get yourself clean before your shower turns cold gives you a new appreciation for long, hot showers. Mmmm…something to look forward to.
We saw a herd of Elk today. It seems that Elk do not travel in one’s and two’s like deer sometime do. The Elk we have seen have been in significantly larger groups. Today there had to have been at least 8-10 and they are big.
We also had to spend some time on some administrative tasks. We’ve been working on some of this for months now and other things are relatively new. Addressing these administrative things is significantly harder now because of sporadic cellular service and rare free wireless internet. Wow! Is that something we take for granted. That’s the reason you haven’t seen a post in a while. Anyway, we’re still trying to secure and complete the shipping of the van from Seattle and so have been communicating with the shipper and Caro. We have been working on Rob’s credentialing with the State of Alaska, Alaska Native Medical Center and Providence Hospital for six months now. The licensing and credentialing are an unbelievably crazy administrative chore. We have been waiting for the University of Minnesota to produce a record of the liability insurance they had on Rob during medical school for ANMC for weeks now and we finally received it and so had to log in to ANMC’s online application to provide that information. AND, it sure seems as if maybe things are coming together on a house in Anchorage. We locked in today and secured insurance, so we had some monkeying around to provide paperwork for the bank we’re going to work with in Anchorage. Closing is set for July 31st and I have arranged for our stuff to be delivered sometime between August 3rd-5th. Our stuff has been in storage in Tacoma, WA since it left NC.

I hope we are set, but this has not been the easiest or smoothest way or circumstances under which to go through the process of buying a house. Whew!
We are missing all our friends in North Carolina. We all met some fantastic people and we are talking and thinking about you all the time. I’m missing the Ronald McDonald House and my work there too.
I hope you are all well. Know that if you are reading this you are in my heart and thoughts.
I never thought I would enjoy this RV trip as much as I/we are. If you ever have an opportunity to do something like this – TAKE IT or CREATE IT!!!! I cannot convey to you the amazing opportunities to build memories we have found and created. Yes, challenges, but worth it!
Peace,
Kim
glad you’re back online. Banff/Jasper is one of our favorite parts of the world. Keep on posting. Weather here has been in the 90’s. Haven’t read your following posts yet, so, until later, be safe, have fun. Love you, Bob
