The RV (Reluctant Voyager? Riding to Villa Villekulla? King Ralph V?)

Allow me to introduce you to my friend. He’s kind of a monster.

He’s the newest member of the Lovrich family. Please welcome the 1999 Winnebago Chieftain, yet to be officially named.

For all of you who are into the cool techie details like I am, here they are:

  • 275 hp Cummins diesel pusher (That’s RV-er talk for a rear-engine rig)
  • Over 600 yummy foot-pounds of torque
  • Allison 6-speed electronic pushbutton transmission
  • A piddly 107,000 miles
  • 90 gallons of diesel that should get us about 600-700 miles on a tank (I’m secretly hoping for a lot more)
  • 36 feet of fun, fun, fun

One of the first things I did was to rip out all the old electronics. I should’ve taken a picture when I had the front-end apart. (Kim was aghast.) But now we have a Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, hi-def, GPS, hotspot-sharing, hands-free, night-vision, rear camera, seriously iOS-enabled rolling electron fest.

It’s a little like a library in here. You can practically see the data packets whizzing around.

And of course just in case the ultra-reliable, hi-tech, fuel-injected, turbocharged Cummins diesel motor should fail us, we have the 1974 350cc 37-hp-on-a-good-day Snot just waiting to pull our collective bacon from the fire.

There are more switches, controls, hidden compartments, and sundry geegaws than I even know what to do with. These are among my least favorite so far:

We can cook in it, sleep in it, shower in it, study in it (in a pinch), post to our blog in it, and hopefully live in it, while we drive across the country. I’m looking forward to getting to know all of its habits and idiosyncrasies.

So far, I have learned to pay strict attention to a preflight checklist. Before driving off, it’s important to make sure you have the antennas down, jacks up, accessories tied down, awnings in, tanks emptied, shore power disconnected, slide retracted, and basements closed. And then try not to drive into stuff.

For all its glory and robustness, there is one glaring deficit. Can you spot it?

We will be adding to that map. Stay tuned.

  • This big rig almost looks like an airliner from the inside. I really hope I get a tour of it and can take it for a spin in Wisconsin.

    • That’s awesome Dan! It is kind of like an airliner, I guess. We can’t wait to show it to you and you can absolutely take it for a ride.

    • Rob sold his BMW motorcycle, but this one has been hidden in the shed and not really ridden very much since we moved to NC. It’s actually my (Kim’s) motorcycle, but in all honesty, I haven’t driven it for years now. It’s essentially Rob’s. He completely restored it 20 years ago already and it needs it again.

  • Love your new home! Sounds like a lot of fun is in store for your trip. I am really impressed with all the electronic stuff you did!

  • Hey Kim , I don’t know why you would be surprised about the tech stuff in the dash of the RV, sounds perfectly logical to me to have all of that entertainment

    • 🙂 I’m certain there are going to be times when we are SOOO happy to have it! Except for when Rob and Olivia came off the sailboat after four days in the hot sun, we haven’t even touched the tv, but I’m guessing you will be right on – at times.

  • Pretty cool!!
Do you really need to know how to hook up the waste disposal system? I know a perfect spot in northwestern Wisconsin where you can just turn on the pump and let it go.

    • Oh, that’s terrible. Dad, are you following the blog and the comments? I’m not sure he’s in tuned to your comment Chuck. I think we’ve got it all figured out – for now. But, thanks Chuck. I’m sure Dad will really appreciate your thoughts. 🙂

  • Wow! You guys are riding in style. Looks better than a family living room on a foundation. Can you make chicken and waffles in the kitchen??

    • Oh, I like that suggestion….I’m certain we could make the chix nuggets and mini-Eggo waffles. I’m not so sure about Dames quality! 🙂 That meal is forever ingrained in my senses. AMAZING!!! Thank you!!
