Endless thanks to John, Cecelia and Wylie Kenan for a grand Carolina sendoff! What better way to start an epic roadtrip to the Pacific Northwest, than with a sailing trip on the Atlantic?
Olivia and I spent the last few days – hot, hotter, and hottest – on John’s delightful sailboat, setting off from Beaufort, NC and heading out to Cape Lookout. Cape Lookout Lighthouse guards the shoals in the area, which extend well out to sea. The lighthouse is painted in an ingenious way as well – the black diamonds are centered on North/South, while the white diamonds are East/West.
John has sailed around the Cape Lookout area most of his life. He knows the area incredibly well. We explored surf-side beaches and protected beaches, snorkeled on the jetty with waves breaking over us (and sea urchins jabbing us in the hand!), and climbed to the top of the lighthouse (which is still in service – it revolves every 14 seconds). Here’s O at the top:
We saw sea turtles, jellyfish, tropical fish on the jetty, and had a great sail on the way back to Beaufort.

I even fished. Yep.
And no, I didn’t catch anything. What a shock.
The weather has been unbelievably hot. Jumping into the ocean at least 4 times a day was absolutely a necessity. We all got sunburned, despite tons of sunscreen. And it was so worth it.
Heading back to the Chapel Hill area now, and dropping off the RV (known from now as Lennie, short for Relentless Vagabond) for a few last minute tweaks before we hit the road Tuesday. We’ll miss North Carolina, and all our wonderful friends. We’ve had a great time here, and the memories will last a lifetime.
Wow..what an adventure..pretty fun following your travels , Paisley and Olivia..enjoy every minute of this, you are making memories that you will keep for a lifetime. travel safe and keep blogging..it is fun to follow your adventures..
Yes, Kerri, I agree….my dear grands will have so many memories of this trip! Hey, O – I’ll expect a ‘show’ just like the old days in NR…you flitting around the living room and giving us all tickets for our reserved seats. Those are some of MY happiest memories. As well as our tea parties – hats, pinkies raised and all. Let’s do one last one while you are here, okay? And Paisley, how about a recitation…get memorizing.
