Murphy’s Law

Just in case we were being too laissez-faire about all of the planning and details going into this trip, yesterday the universe decided to spice things up a bit.

We are in Hillsborough, NC (home while in NC) so that Rob could go to UNC today to truly complete his fellowship. He did it!Rob's Done with Fellowship (Just to really put it out there, Rob works well under pressure!!!! He has had three years to complete a research project and write a “publishable” paper. He was meeting with a couple members of his research committee to sign off on the paper this morning and he finished the paper at 7am this morning after an all-nighter. He did it!!!! And it’s great!!!!) If you want to see the paper I’d be happy to share it. I don’t think Rob would, but just let me (Kim) know if you are interested in a paper called, “A New Tool to Facilitate Shared Decision Making for Trisomy 13 and 18”.  Woohoo!! Congratulations Rob! 10 years and you are now done with your formal training as a Pediatric Intensivist.

Anyway, I digress with some of the picayune details (not really!) that have detoured us. 🙂

Murphy’s Law…the “check engine” light came on in our VW Routan minivan Sunday afternoon.

We were able to get it into a shop today, Monday, and thankfully it just needs a tune up – replace plugs and wires and maybe a fuel injector cleaner. It is going to delay our departure from NC and the crazy heat a bit tomorrow but not by too much. By around noon tomorrow we should be driving away from Hillsborough until the next time we visit.

We will then be headed to Statesville, NC where we will retrieve Lenny to begin our journey North only after we hopefully finally receive the title for it and go to the NCDMV to register it. Nothing like things coming together at the last minute! Rob is thriving on this. I feel like we’ve been beat up today but Rob is  contentedly plugging along.

Maybe we won’t be on the road until Wednesday morning but that’s okay too. Our first visit to family is Wetmore, MI in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where we will visit with Rob’s dad and Kathy and we are expected sometime Friday morning. It’s about a thousand miles from Statesville and we have reservations  at an RV park along the shores of Lake Erie Wednesday night and then Thursday on Lake Huron, the straits of Mackinac.

Now it’s on to the next chapter. Thanks Mac!

  • I love the dragonfly on MAC! Thanks for sending back my grandpa’s book. I had forgotten you had it. It has been so fun to read your blogs and enjoy your adventures! I’ve got the calendar marked for your arrival here!

  • Whew…living on the edge. I would’ve been swigging PeptoBismol nonstop. Congratulations Rob, now go to what you do!

Kim, is that you in a dress getting fairy hair? Beauteous

  • I hope you will post pics of the map periodically as you plot your travels….

We saw O’Day in Elmos with friends last night. Sarah was peeved that I forgot to mention to her you’d be in town Monday… (meant to, really…) But I was struck by how much O’Day looks like Paisley! The genetic material runs true….

Also, I would love a link to Rob’s paper. I likely won’t understand 80 percent of it, but…

  • Congrats Rob, you finally made it. Chuckled when I read that you thrive on the chaos when I know how much I prefer to have a plan (not that it helps when the shooting starts). Can’t wait to see you guys when you get here. Drive safely and will see you within the week.

  • Did the dragonfly just happen by the Mac in the sand? if so, how serendipitous!! Good fortune is guaranteed on your journey.

And, yes, Kim, I am eager to read his paper – even if, as a non-medical professional, I may not understand it!!

Can’t wait for Sunday to get here – and all my favorite people!
